Wearing Both Suspenders AND a Belt
A lot of men end up doubling down on both suspenders and a belt when putting on their fanciest clothes. Be sure that you avoid making this mistake.
Suspenders and belts are both meant to hold up your trousers. Therefore, there's no reason to even think about wearing them both at once! In our opinion, belts are the most versatile choice between the two and can be worn at both casual and formal gatherings. Suspenders should only be worn on formal occasions.
Wearing White Socks with Black Dress Shoes
Here’s another fashion faux pas to avoid: mismatching your dress shoes and socks. The most common version of this error is wearing white socks with black dress shoes.
The only time you should wear white socks is if you wear exceptionally light (think light beige) dress shoes, and even then, it's iffy. Black dress socks are the way to go 90% of the time, especially with dark-colored dress shoes.
Wearing Dirty Dress Shoes
Similarly, be sure to give your shoes at least a brief wash or scrub down before heading to a social engagement. You don't need to full-on polish them when you're heading to casual events, but it's still a good idea to make your dress shoes look presentable at a bare minimum. Of course, a little polish never hurts, and it can really make your shoes stand out and look exceptional when you show up.
Wearing a Suit That Doesn’t Fit
Naturally, it’s a fashion faux pas to put on a suit that doesn’t look like it was made just for you. Granted, getting a suit tailored for your exact body dimensions is expensive, and many guys won’t be able to afford it in their younger years. That’s fine.
The point is that your suit needs to fit you well enough. There shouldn’t be any baggy material under your armpits, by your shoulders, and around the seat of your pants. Make sure that your suit fits you decently before heading to a social engagement.
Popping the Collar
It isn’t the 1950s anymore, so do us all a favor and don’t pop the collar of your dress shirt or jacket. Not only does it look out of place, but it will also appear that you don’t have a clue about current fashion trends. Contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t make you look cool. Instead, it just draws bad attention to your outfit.
Not Doing Your Hair At Least a Little
Lastly, be sure that you at least give your hair a comb-over before you head out. Not every guy has a particularly extravagant or noticeable hairstyle, especially if their hair is relatively short. That’s fine. But you need to at least comb your hair and make sure that it’s clean and dry before stepping outside your house.
On the flip side, if you do have longer hair, throw a little gel or wax in there so you can make a statement and adopt a hairstyle that suits your face and aesthetic. Your hair says a lot about the kind of look you're going for, as does combing your hair to make it presentable.
