How Should A 70 Year Old Man Dress?

It’s never too late to upgrade your sense of style. For men who are 70 years old and older, though, you may have a lot of questions. Not only do you want to know the latest fashion rules, but you want to know what’s appropriate for you. What can you wear? What should you avoid? What’s changed since five years ago? The answers are easier than you might think! This is how a 70 year old man should dress.

Dress Your Age

So, how should a 70 year old man dress? It may be tempting to get out the latest pictures from GQ and imagine that whatever you see there will look good on you. And you know what? That’s not the worst approach. But there may be some items that are targeted to a demographic of 25-50 year olds that may not be up your alley, either. Here’s what it means to dress your age:

  • Invest in neutral colors. When you hit 60 years and older, neutrals should become your best friends. But that’s not because you should limit yourself to this palette. It’s because neutral tones in your jackets and slacks will allow you to have some fun with shirt colors and accessories that pop.
  • Get your clothes tailored. Don’t rely on a jacket that “fit ten years ago” as your standby. You’re a new age now, and sometimes that means a body that’s shaped differently. If you want a proper silhouette for your body type, you’ll have to update the tailoring and fit of your clothes—particularly your trousers and your suit jackets.

Hold Yourself to a Higher Standard

When you’re at the age of retirement, the temptation is to slack off. After all, you’ve already worked hard your entire life—haven’t you earned the right to wear sneakers and eat fast food once in a while?

Well, sure. But that shouldn’t be ALL the time! You want to hold yourself to a higher standard than that. Here are some ways to do so, even once you reach retirement age:

  • Upgrade from the bottom up. No more sneakers that look like they came from your gardening gear from 10 years ago. If you still want something casual, invest in some proper loafers for going out.
  • Match your colors. Turning 70 means a lot of things. But you know what it doesn’t mean? That the rules of color matching no longer apply to you. Avoid matching brown belts with black shoes, for example, and stick to tried-and-true color combinations like blue and grey, white and khaki, and other neutral tones.

Enhance Your Wardrobe with Berle

Finally, it’s important to make sure that you have some high-quality, go-to trousers to support your new standards. Invest in some casual pants from Berle that you can order custom to your current size. This will allow your suits and casual outfits to better give you the flattering appearance you’re after!
