5 Tips on Transitioning from Summer to Fall Style
Summer isn’t over yet, but warm weather and sunny skies are giving way to the earliest fall. Just like the leaves, it’s a good idea to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall styles for men. There’s just one problem; you have no idea where to start! Fortunately, we have five key tips to help you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. Best of all, you won’t need to purchase too many new things.
1. Layers, Layers, Layers
Layering up is an excellent idea in the fall and winter months. Why? In the fall, odds are you'll head outdoors in the morning when it is still pretty chilly. For this, you'll want a jacket or button-down to keep you warm and toasty. But in the middle of the day, temperatures may rise and it will be too warm for those long-sleeve layers. If you wear a layered outfit, you can strip away the upper layers, like a jacket, and be comfortable in a T-shirt. In contrast, if you just wear one thick layer on top, you can’t take it off even if you become too hot!
2. Invest in Good Boots
Footwear becomes very important as summer gives way to fall. After all, fall weather usually brings cloudy skies and a little bit of rain. If you live at a high elevation or northward, you may even experience some early snowstorms in October or November! With that in mind, you should invest in some quality boots. Chelsea boots are fantastic because they are stylish and fall-like in their aesthetics. Plus, they fit with short sleeve T-shirts, Charleston khakis, and a variety of other fall staples or versatile clothing options. You don’t have to just wear them with jeans!
Since you can wear Chelsea boots (or other good boots) with different upper wear selections, they’ll suit you well regardless of whether the temperatures are on the warmer or cooler sides.
3. Summer Staples, Fall Accessories
When putting together complete outfits, stick with your summer staples or primary clothing articles at first. For example, say that you love to wear T-shirts and jeans in the summer weather. Keep those clothing articles in your wardrobe. However, complement those articles with fall-themed accessories, such as:
- Belts or watches with darker colors
- Button-down or long-sleeve over shirts in fall colors
- Boots (as described above)
By accessorizing your outfit with fall-themed articles and items, you acknowledge that fall is on the way but still look perfectly fashionable for the in-between season we find ourselves in.
4. Button-Downs and Jeans
In the mood for something simple and easy to throw together? You can’t go wrong with a button-down shirt and jeans. Alternatively, you can opt for tailored slacks, such as denim trousers from Berle or Performance Dress Khakis if you’re going to a slightly more formal event or social occasion.
In any case, a button-down shirt and jeans will serve you well at the office, an oyster roast, or a more casual social occasion. Button-downs and jeans are perfect for the in-between weather that's common between summer and fall.
However, be prepared to wear your button-down with a T-shirt or tank top underneath. Remember the above layering tip – if things get too hot for you to wear a long-sleeve button-down shirt, strip down to your underlayer and you’ll be more comfortable in minutes.
5. Pivot to Deeper Colors
Lastly, when choosing slacks, shirts, shoes, or anything else, make sure to choose new articles in deeper colors that are associated with fall. Good fall colors include:
- Brown
- Orange
- Burgundy or other dark shades of red
- Gray
- Deep, dark blue
When you pivot to deeper colors, you ensure that your wardrobe will fit with the surrounding aesthetics of fall decorations, especially as we get closer to popular fall holidays like Thanksgiving and Halloween. Try to stay away from brighter, summery colors like light blue, yellow, green, and so on.
